It is quite meaningful moment for myself. Well, for quite couple of reasons you know, like doing reflection on the meaning of Merdeka, about namewee incident and racial problems and politics and so on. And ya, for meeting some nice people while blogging on namewee issue.

Oh, and of cause, I did remember to wear my black shirt today as well ;)

A Warning to Namawee by Terrorist?

A YouTube video was uploaded with the title "warning to namawee" by tolaba4. I feel that this video is more even insulting Islam and the name of Allah. I believe that making a direct link between Islam and terrorism is totally a propaganda. We love Malaysia, for peace sake, we should kick away those terrorist.

Looking back to look ahead

An interview with Mr. Lim Kit Siang: Looking back to look ahead ©The Sun
Thursday, 23 August 2007, 08:33am

Everywhere we go we proclaim that we are a multi-racial and multi-religious Malaysia with the various races living peacefully together. But this, as you said just now, is not internalised, not spoken from the heart. But what can we do?

I think the leadership should set an example with all institutes and organisation in society following them from behind. To internalise the diversity in this country you must be sincere and faithful to these fundamental principals.

Actually when we started we never established clear directions on what nation-building entails. There was no road map on how we are going to build up this nation. Do you think we need something like that, to have an actual road map on what we are going to do.

The general principles have always been there. There is the social contract which says we are a democratic, multi-religious, multi-racial, progressive country where Islam is the official religion of the Federation but not an Islamic state.

We have the formula. Not true to say we do not have a formula. But it so happen that those in authority are seemingly moving further and further away from this basic formula.

Even those at the top are seemingly reluctant to admit that Malaysia is now a secular state even though the courts have declared so.

You know for 44 years we can see that there is no questioning that Malaysia is a secular state. Islam is the official religion, it is not an Islamic state. There were instances of course when there were marginal peripheral voices asking that we move towards an Islamic state. They were not in the mainstream. But now the whole thing seems to have been reversed.

Those who call for the the secular state have been marginalised and regarded as a periphery and those who feel that Malaysia is an Islamic state has now occupied the mainstream.

How did this change take place? This is a whole question of a tectonic shift in nation-building. And now these things cannot be talked about, cannot be discussed even. I don’t think this will solve any problem.

Many things seem to be so sensitive now that they have been taken out of public discussion. Is this healthy?

No. But why is it happening? If we can have public discussion on a social contract in 1956 and 1957, why can’t we have a public discussion as to why this social contract must be maintained, and should be reaffirmed? Everybody talks about social contract, today, but behind closed doors.

It is important to remember that this social contract is not the property of the ruling parties. It is a heritage and legacy of all Malaysians and all Malaysians today have a right to give input on the status of a social contract today.

It is going to be totally lacking in credibility if discussions on this social contract are held behind closed doors.

Every Malaysian should be involved. It cannot be something that you can go to a corner and discuss it in the closet. Where is participatory democracy? You are now shutting down avenues of expression.

'Negarakuku': Enough! ministry tells media

Malaysiakini : The Internal Security Ministry has directed the mainstream media to stop publishing reports related to the ‘Negarakuku’ controversy.

This was confirmed by the ministry’s Publications Control and Al-Quran Texts Unit senior officer Che Din Yusof.

“Yes, the directive was issued today,” he said when contacted. “What more is there for the papers to write? Enough is enough.

“There are so many other things that can bring benefit to the nation, why focus on this issue and bring in other points? He (Wee Meng Chee) has already apologised,” he added.

However, Che Din said the media can still report on comments made by Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his deputy Najib Abdul Razak on the issue.

Raise tensions

Meanwhile, Che Din justified the ministry’s move in issuing the directive on the grounds that the issue can raise tensions in the country.

“(If we keep talking about it) it will raise tensions, do you know that?

“You as an emotional layman can say anything, If I wasn’t a civil servant, I can say anything too. It’s too polemic already in the newspapers,” he said.

According to him, political leaders, NGOs and Wee himself can no longer have their statements published in the newspapers.

As for the exception given to the prime minister and his deputy, Che Din said the statements made by these leaders are aimed at "fixing the situation".

Asked whether there is a similar ban on the broadcast media, he said: “Those belong to other ministries but if it was under (my ministry), I would order them to stop (broadcasting the Negarakuku issue too).

Utusan Malaysia Online - : MCA bersetuju Meng Chee dihukum

M for Merdeka

V: Good evening, London. Allow me first to apologize for this interruption. I do, like many of you, appreciate the comforts of every day routine - the security of the familiar, the tranquility of repetition. I enjoy them as much as any bloke. But in the spirit of commemoration, thereby those important events of the past usually associated with someone's death or the end of some awful bloody struggle, a celebration of a nice holiday, I thought we could mark this November the 5th, a day that is sadly no longer remembered, by taking some time out of our daily lives to sit down and have a little chat. There are of course those who do not want us to speak. I suspect even now, orders are being shouted into telephones, and men with guns will soon be on their way. Why? Because while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth. And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. I know why you did it. I know you were afraid. Who wouldn't be? War, terror, disease. There were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense. Fear got the best of you, and in your panic you turned to the now high chancellor, Adam Sutler. He promised you order, he promised you peace, and all he demanded in return was your silent, obedient consent. Last night I sought to end that silence. Last night I destroyed the Old Bailey, to remind this country of what it has forgotten. More than four hundred years ago a great citizen wished to embed the fifth of November 31st of August forever in our memory. His hope was to remind the world that fairness, justice, and freedom are more than words, they are perspectives. So if you've seen nothing, if the crimes of this government remain unknown to you then I would suggest you allow the fifth of November 31st of August to pass unmarked. But if you see what I see, if you feel as I feel, and if you would seek as I seek, then I ask you to stand beside me one year from tonight, outside the gates of Parliament, and together we shall give them a fifth of November 31st of August that shall never, ever be forgot. People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people. Strength through unity, unity through faith! I am V. At last you know the truth. You're stunned, I know. It's hard to believe, isn't it, that beneath this wrinkled, well-fed exterior there lies a dangerous killing machine with a fetish for Fawkesian masks. Vive la revolution!

Wee said: "Right from the start, I felt I should go through the legal channel as they only wanted to play up the issue."

"That's my stand right from the beginning. If I had to apologise, I will only apologise by the law," he said. " I will not apologise to anybody. These people are just playing a lot of things at my back."

"They have their own agenda, I can't help it. You see, the general election is drawing nearer, so is Merdeka. They have their own kind of pressure."

"I have apologised and yet the matter cannot be resolved, they must have a lot of explanation to do... to the Malays, to the the people who are against me."

Berita Harian Online - Jualan secara terbuka CD di Muar perlekeh Bumiputera

Berita Harian Online - Ilmu & Maklumat (Malaysia) s8.emedia.com.my: "Lagi lagu Meng Chee hina Melayu Oleh Junita Mat Rasid

A Star editor tipped me off in the afternoon of August 16 on why the Cabinet had decided to subject Wee Meng Chee to legal action despite having his father stage a public apology at the Health Minister's office.

Apparently, Information Minister got too excited and exposed some details of what went on during the Cabinet meeting. ZAM was quoted by the editor, who read the news filed in the system by his reporters, as having said:

Bukan Umno. Bukan MCA... Gerakan!"

Dr Lim Keng Yaik is the only Gerakan representative in the Cabinet.

An Inconvenient Truth

I can understand why namewee apologies, and I think that WE who love namewee SHOULD understand him for making this decision UNDER PRESSURE. I believe that he sincerely apologies for hurting some Malaysians feel offended by his work.

The inconvenient truth is Prime Minister said the law would still have to take its course as namewee could be charged under the National Anthem Act 1968 with disrespecting and lowering the prestige of the Negaraku.

More inconvenient truths are...
BUKTI PERTAMA – Malaysia BUKAN 50 tahun. Hari Malaysia BUKAN 31 Ogos. Projek Malaysia bermula pada 16 September 1963. Sila google untuk kesahihan fakta ini. Jika TIDAK percaya sila pergi tanya Mat Sabah atau Minah Serawak. Dua wilayah ini memasuki Malaysia pada 16 September 1963 BUKAN 31 Ogos 1957.

BUKTI KEDUA - Tuntutan MERDEKA adalah projek dan tuntutan Persatuan Kebangsaan Melayu Malaya (PKMM). Merdeka BUKAN projek United Malay National Organisations. Projek United Malay Organisations ialah – HIDUP Melayu. ( macamlah Tanah Melayu tak ada oksigen)

BUKTI KE TIGA - Kemerdekaan di capai tanpa tumpah darah. BOHONG.

Beliau yang menulis muzik lagu Memula Moon a.k.a Negara-ku.

Student must face the law, Cabinet, however, accepts his apology

Student must face the law, Cabinet, however, accepts his apology - The Star
By DEVID RAJAH and V.P. SUJATA,

PUTRAJAYA: The Cabinet has accepted the apology by student Wee Meng Chee, who caused a furore with his Negaraku rap video clip on video-sharing web portal YouTube, said Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

However, the Prime Minister said the law would still have to take its course.

Wee, 24, could be charged under the National Anthem Act 1968 with disrespecting and lowering the prestige of the Negaraku, he said.

Abdullah said a Minister had brought up the matter during the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

Good job: Abdullah shaking hands with Federation of Malaysia Manufacturers president Tan Sri Yong Pok Kon after the press conference on Pemudah at his office in Putrajaya yesterday.
“He (Wee) said he wants to apologise, we can accept. But if it is an offence, how to let him go without him being punished? The law has to take its course,” he said during a press conference on the Special Task Force to Facilitate Business here yesterday.

Wee’s six-minute video of a Mandarin rap number using the Negaraku as background created an uproar, with several quarters condemning him for mocking the national anthem and making offensive statements.

The 24-year-old mass communications student at Ming Chuan University in Taiwan had on Tuesday apologised for the parody In Kuala Lumpur, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said the Cabinet was not in the position to forgive Wee, LOH FOON FONG reports.

Nazri said “the offence was not against the Prime Minister or Ministers concerned but against the nation.”

”If he had committed an offence, and I think it was an offence, then we must allow the Attorney-General to investigate and decide whether to take him to court,” said Nazri.

“To not prosecute him is not ‘on’ at all because he has committed an offence against the nation and no one, not the Cabinet or political parties, are in a position to forgive him.”

Wee could be charged under the Sedition Act because he had insulted the symbol of the nation, he said.

“We cannot be like the West where you can have the underwear with the design of the Union Jack. In Britain, you can insult the Queen or the flag, I don’t care, but in this country we have laws and we cannot set a precedent whereby you commit an offence, apologise and get away with it,” Nazri said, adding that Wee was not a boy but a 24-year-old man and he should be held responsible for the act.

“It is not about ethnicity or being racial but it is against national interest,” he said.

When asked how Wee had insulted the national anthem, Nazri said the song was supposed to be sung in a proper way, otherwise it would mean insulting the song, especially when the lyrics were changed.

“Malaysia Negaraku ku. Ku ku can also mean ‘cuckoo’, so it was insulting. I don’t think this was done out of ignorance. He was a university student and he meant to insult the national anthem,” he said.

On whether Wee would be called home to answer charges against him, Nazri said the A-G would have to investigate and if he decides to prosecute him, then when Wee returns, he would have to face the charges.

The Minister also said that he wanted action to be taken against YouTube and other bloggers who allowed sensitive material which went against the laws of Malaysia to be published.

Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim concurred with Nazri, saying that the country was governed by the rule of law and Wee had to abide by it.

Cabinet rejects apology from Negaraku rapper

Cabinet rejects apology from Negaraku rapper: Cabinet rejects apology from Negaraku rapper
By LOH FOON FONG

KUALA LUMPUR: The Cabinet has not accepted student Wee Meng Chee’s apology for the furore caused by his Negaraku rap videoclip on video-sharing web portal YouTube.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said the Cabinet had decided yesterday that they were not in the position to forgive him and that “the law would have to take its course”.

“The offence was not against the Prime Minister or ministers concerned but against the nation,” Nazri told reporters after the launch of the International Conference on Media and Information Warfare: A Global Challenge of the 21st Century here.

“If he had committed an offence, which I think was an offence, then we must allow the Attorney General to investigate and decide whether to take him to court,” he said.

Wee had on Tuesday apologised for the parody and agreed to remove the videoclip from his blog.

Nazri said Wee’s apology could be used as mitigation in sentencing but not as a reason to not prosecute him.

“To not prosecute him is not ‘on’ at all because he has committed an offence against the nation and no one, not the Cabinet or political parties, are in the position to forgive him,” he said.

Wee could be charged under the Sedition Act because he had insulted the symbol of the nation, he said.

“We cannot be like the West where you can have the underwear with the design of the Union Jack. In Britain, you can insult the Queen or the flag, I don’t care, but in this country we have laws and we cannot create a precedent where you commit an offence, apologise and get away with it,” he said adding that Wee was not a boy but a 24-year-old man and he should be held responsible for the act.

“It is not an issue of ethnicity or being racial but against national interest,” he said.

When asked how Wee had insulted the national anthem, Nazri said the song was supposed to be sung based on how it should be sung, otherwise, it would mean insulting the song, especially when the lyrics were changed.

“Malaysia Negaraku ku. 'Ku ku' can also mean ‘cuckoo’ so it was insulting. I don’t think this was done out of ignorance. He was a university student and he meant to insult the national song,” he said.

On whether Wee would be called home to answer charges against him, Nazri said the AG would have to investigate and if he comes to the decision to prosecute him, then when Wee returns, he would have to face the charges.

He also said that he wanted action to be taken against video-sharing portal YouTube and other bloggers who have allowed sensitive material to be published that went against the law of our country.

Namewee Apologises

Student apologises, withdraws videoclip - The Star
PETALING JAYA: Taiwan-based university student Wee Meng Chee, who created a controversy with his Negaraku videoclip on YouTube has tendered his apology for hurting the feelings of Malaysians offended by his work.

"The controversy has taught me a lesson in nationalism and race relations. To end the controversy, I have decided to pull out the videoclip from my blog and I hope other bloggers would stop distributing the videoclip,'' he said.

Negarakuku

Lima Puluh Tahun Terang Bulan Terbarai- Hishamuddin Rais

Lima Puluh Tahun Terang Bulan Terbarai- Hishamuddin Rais « ntbn.wordpress.com:

Memula Moon a.k.a Terang Bulan a.k.a Negaraku a.k.a Negara Kuku kini menjadi top hit yang hampir mencecah satu juta pendengar dan puluhan ribu memberi komen.

Awalnya Terang Bulan dimainkan sebelum filem bermula. Kami kanak-kanak seperti biasa dibuli agar bangun berdiri – kunoon –sebagai contoh rakyat patriotik. Kemudian, entah apa berlaku Terang Bulan dimainkan apabila filem selesai diputar.

Sila google perkataan Negara-ku. Masih was was , sila lawati YouTube.

Tutup lubang gali lubang.

BUKTI PERTAMA – Malaysia BUKAN 50 tahun. Hari Malaysia BUKAN 31 Ogos. Projek Malaysia bermula pada 16 September 1963. Sila google untuk kesahihan fakta ini. Jika TIDAK percaya sila pergi tanya Mat Sabah atau Minah Serawak. Dua wilayah ini memasuki Malaysia pada 16 September 1963 BUKAN 31 Ogos 1957.

BUKTI KEDUA - Tuntutan MERDEKA adalah projek dan tuntutan Persatuan Kebangsaan Melayu Malaya (PKMM). Merdeka BUKAN projek United Malay National Organisations. Projek United Malay Organisations ialah – HIDUP Melayu. ( macamlah Tanah Melayu tak ada oksigen)

BUKTI KE TIGA - Kemerdekaan di capai tanpa tumpah darah. BOHONG.

Beliau yang menulis muzik lagu Memula Moon a.k.a Negara-ku.

Ministry to check if rapper Wee in Taiwan on govt loan

Ministry to check if rapper Wee in Taiwan on govt loan: "Ministry to check if rapper Wee in Taiwan on govt loan - By SIM LEOI LEOI

PUTRAJAYA: The Internal Security Ministry said it would check with the Higher Education Ministry whether Wee Meng Chee, who rapped to the Negaraku in a videoclip, is studying in Taiwan on a scholarship or government loan.

The ministry's secretary-general Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said he had already spoken with his counterpart at the Higher Education Ministry for information on Wee. 'He went to Taiwan to study and not to write songs. But we will let the ministry study his status first before contemplating any kind of action against him or deciding if he will have to come back.

'If we find there is any element of crime or sedition in his song, we will move in,' he told reporters after attending a seminar on important targets at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre here today.

Abdul Aziz said he had not personally watched the video which could be found at the free video portal YouTube.

Wee, a 24-year-old mass communications student at Ming Chuan University in Taiwan, had insisted that he was being patriotic when he was singing the song in the six-minute videoclip."
I wonder how the ministry could comment on the clip since he had not watched it. Thus, I am so afraid that things had gone too far and causing misunderstandings among Malays when the news was written by a racist.

myMetro: "Pelajar cerca negara, polis - Oleh Ahmad Fitri Che Musa

KUALA LUMPUR: Biadab!

University student comes under fire for video clip

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian student Wee Meng Chee has frequently courted controversy with his numerous postings on video search engine YouTube, but his latest parody of the national anthem has been severely criticised by politicians.

Wee has come under fire for mocking the national anthem and making statements many found offensive because they contained racial slurs.

His six-minute video clip, which used Negaraku in a Mandarin rap, has been viewed more than 400,000 times since the middle of last month.

Wee, a 24-year-old mass communications student at Ming Chuan University in Taiwan, has insisted that he is patriotic.

'I wrote the song in conjunction with the country's 50th anniversary of independence and it is my gift to the country,' the Johorean said.

Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Mohd Johari Baharum said police would investigate the rap video while MCA Youth chief Datuk Liow Tiong Lai said Wee had insulted the national anthem.

Liow said that Wee, who used the name 'Namewee,' seemed patriotic but needed guidance to show his patriotism in the proper way.

Wee said he did not mean to be seditious or to attack the Government.

Daily Express, Sabah, Malaysia -- News Headlines: Action on student who insulted anthem

Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysian university student in Taiwan who insulted the 'Negaraku' and mocked the Government in a video clip will be recalled, Parliamentary Secretary to the Higher Education Ministry, Datuk Dr Adham Baba, said here Tuesday.

He said if investigation showed the student was sponsored by the Government, he would be recalled to be followed by other forms of action.

'Let the Ministry investigate this matter to ascertain the truth,' he told reporters after launching the Caring Hospital Enterprise System (CHEST), Filmless Hospital and IT literate programme at Universiti Kebangsaan Hospital (HUKM), here.

Dr Adham was commenting on antics by the student who went by the name 'Namewee' in a video clip singing the 'Negaraku' littered with obscenities.

The national anthem 'Negaraku' was renamed 'Negarakuku' in the five minute 32 sec video clip on a website last month.

Malaysian student in trouble for YouTube rap

Malaysian student in trouble for YouTube rap - AFP

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysian authorities are investigating the YouTube video of a student rapping to the national anthem using allegedly seditious lyrics, the Straits Times reported Wednesday, citing officials.

Nearly half-a-million people have already watched the six-minute video by Namewee, a 24-year-old Malaysian student at Taiwan's Ming Chuan University, a log on the popular video sharing site showed.

In the intro to the video, which shows a Malaysian flag in the background, Namewee dedicates the song to "all Malaysians, specially the government."

According to the paper, the song - in a mixture of Mandarin and Bahasa - contained lyrics which "touched on racially-sensitive issues by sarcastically singing the morning call to prayer for Muslims."

A partial translation of the lyrics circulating in the Internet says they also portray Malaysian police as corrupt extortionists.

Deputy internal security minister Johari Baharum said police would look at the video clip to determine whether the student violated the country's strict sedition laws.

"If he has, we will act against him under the Sedition Act," Johari said.

Originally enacted by British colonial authorities, sedition is punishable by up to three years in prison and a fine of 5,000 ringgit ($1,400).

Rights groups and press freedom activists have previously accused Malaysian authorities of applying the law to stifle political critics.

Liow Tiong, the deputy youth and sports minister, said that while Namawee may have only tried to express his nationalism, he had inadvertently insulted the national anthem.

"He seems patriotic but needs guidance to show his patriotism in the proper way," he said, adding he should not have disparaged national symbols.

At the end of the video clip, Namewee says in Bahasa: "Don't sue me. I don't have money."

CD versions of the song are reportedly being sold secretly in Kuala Lumpur bazaars or night markets.

Merdeka Statement

Merdeka Statement
In the struggles towards forging a national identity, great efforts have been taken to strengthen national unity in the country, which must be supported by all. However, recently the state of unity has been fraying at the edges. Ethnic, linguistic and religious divides have deepened, causing genuine pain and hurt to many in our nation. Such a fragile state of unity should not have happened after 50 years of nation building. New sustained efforts are urgently needed to rebuild our National Unity.

WE BELIEVE THAT:
  • The current National Unity Advisory Panel, under the Jabatan Perpaduan Negara & Integrasi Nasional, should be made an independent National Unity & Integration Commission, empowered to review legislation, policies and practices that impede on national unity, investigate complaints of ethnic, linguistic and religious discrimination both in Government and the private sector; made answerable to Parliament and chaired by reputable and credible individuals; and include a Truth and Reconciliation Committee, which will serve to grapple with key incidents of conflict and hurt in the country’s past, which is an important and necessary part of the healing of the national psyche, in the road towards a peaceful shared future.
  • All new policies should be tested against the tenets of the Federal Constitution and the Rukunegara - no policy formulated should becontrary to the spirit of the values contained therein.
  • An independent and transparent National Consultative Council on Vision 2020 should be established immediately, for representatives from the Government, private sector businesses, academia, media and civil society to discuss progress towards Vision 2020 and beyond.
  • A National Research Institute on Ethnic Relations should be established as a centre that co-ordinates in-depth research on Ethnic Relations and Culture, compiling stories of inter-ethnic cooperation and mutual assistance.
  • Public-Private Partnerships to strengthen National Unity should be launched at all levels and in all sectors.
  • Islam is the religion of the Federation of Malaysia as clearly set out in the Federal Constitution. The freedom to profess and practice the religions of choice as enshrined in the Federal Constitution does not threaten this position. The Government has committed itself to the principles of freedom, protection of minorities and universal values, values of which must be continuously and relentlessly upheld for the sake of all Malaysians.
  • Any extremism in the form and shape of ethnicity, religion and gender should not be propagated or tolerated at any level.
WE BELIEVE THAT THE FEDERAL CONSTITUTION AS SUPREME LAW OF THE LAND IS THE PRIMARY REFERENCE POINT FOR STRENGTHENING NATIONAL UNITY, AND THAT ALL NATIONAL POLICIES SHOULD BE TESTED AGAINST ITS CENTRAL TENETS.
